The Constitution Inn
Today we had planned a train trip to Portland, Maine. It ended up being a wild goose chase, or boondoggle, as John called it. The train ride was meant for viewing the lovely New England countryside and some vibrant autumn leaves. Unfortunately we saw mostly trees on each side of the tracks. It was far from the scenic journey we had invisioned and we learned the hard way, September 22nd was a bit early for fall foliage. We did see some fall color, more than in Florida, but not much.
We arrived in Portland around 11:30 AM and took a bus into town.
We strolled the waterfront and then found a restaurant called Bull Feeney's. John had lobster roll (again!) and Sam Adams (again!) I had an open-faced crab and avocado melt, also with Sam, and we shared mixed fries---white and sweet potatoes. Everything was delicious.
By then it was already time to walk back to the bus stop and hope to get back to the Amtrak station, which we did with time to spare. The return trip to Boston was pretty uneventful as well. The coach was quite empty and quiet which was fine with us.
As soon as we got back to the North Station we jumped on the green line to Copley Square. We wanted to tour the Boston Public Library. We had a very nice and knowledgeable docent and enjoyed the art and architecture tour. What a beautiful old building!
When we got back to Long Wharf we had missed the 7:30 ferry and had to wait for the 8 PM.
Back in Charlestown we ended up having a late supper at Tavern on the Water, where we shared clam chowder---John said the best so far, blackened scallops with horseradish marmalade sauce (Yum!) and crab and asparagus baked haddock (excellent). We were both surprised it was all so good! And we had a discount coupon, too.
Another full day but not so tiring.
