"Everytime I have some moment on a seashore or in the mountains, or sometimes in a quiet forest, I think this is why the environment has to be preserved."
                                                            -Bill Bradley

We departed for the North Rim at 9:45 AM.  Little did we know what amazing things we would see as we were leaving Zion!  We traveled an interesting road with steep grades and switchbacks and gorgeous views.

We went through tunnels, one just over a mile long, with "windows" every so often revealing one lovely scene after another.  When we arrived at Checkerboard Mesa we got off the bus and David gave a mini-lecture about this rare formation---possibly the only one in the world.

Our group had a nice lunch at Jacob Lake Inn and visited the Grand Canyon Visitor Center adjacent to it. I ended up getting a free backpack and book for joining the Grand Canyon Association.

We arrived at the Grand Canyon Lodge about the same time as the rain and had to find our cabin and drag luggage in a light drizzle.  It all worked out though and we had dinner in the beautiful lodge dining room while the sun was setting.

The ranger talk after dinner was somewhat interesting but I must admit I rested my eyes part of the time. The topic was fire as a friend to the canyon and forest.  We may have heard almost the exact same talk when we were at the North Rim in 2008.
