"There are no other Everglades in the world. They are, they have always been, one of the unique regions of the earth; remote, never wholly known. Nothing anywhere else is like them."
-Marjory Stoneman Douglas, from Everglades: River of Grass

After breakfast we had a speaker who presented an overview of the Everglades. It was pretty interesting especially after he covered the geology and hydrology and got around to the flora and fauna!

Our first field trip was in the afternoon to Fakahatchee Strand. Our coordinator was new to the area and the bus driver must have been unfamiliar with the program because we got lost. Time was wasted and we only got halfway through the boardwalk before it was time to leave. That was disappointing but our guide was excellent, pointing out a nesting bald eagle, a momma gator with babies, a pileated woodpecker and other critters.

Next stop was Big Cypress Preserve and unfortunately there were problems finding it, too!  Once located it was a great experience. At the Visitor Center there, we met a lady named Lisa, our speaker and guide. This was a woman who obviously loves her job! We viewed a film about Big Cypress and observed manatees and a blue crab from the boardwalk but the highlight was Lisa!  We dropped a little change in the gift shop but I still hadn't found post card stamps (for mailing cards to grandchildren, of course)!  I had already asked at the hotel and marina store.

The after-dinner program was Birds of the Everglades, Part 1, quite informative.
