"The mountains are calling and I must go."
                                                             -John Muir

We were so excited to begin this Road Scholar program, Greater Yellowstone: Heart of the Continent, program #2809RJ! A trip to Yellowstone National Park had been on our "bucket lists" for quite some time.
A friend told me that flying into Jackson, WY, was an amazing experience.  He was SO right!  The runway is surrounded by mountains, in June still covered with snow and so beautiful. A feast for the senses for us semi-native Floridians---mountains AND snow and a bit of nip in the air! What a surprise for folks used to Orlando International Airport to arrive at this one-horse airport (pun intended!) where there is no jet/air bridge for deboarding and you can see the entire facility from the entry doors. There is even an arch of elk antlers that travelers go through, but disappointingly a guard to move you past without taking photos. Little did we know that the town square has the same arches at each corner.

We arrived in Jackson in time for lunch at Bubba's Barbecue, recommended by our driver from the airport. We enjoyed the food but later learned from other Road Scholar participants that they had acquired food poisoning there so obviously I won't recommend it!
We had some time to explore the town---sort of a trip back in time, with wooden sidewalks and stagecoaches even! Lots of cowboys around, mingling with the tourists. A great place to shop for western art and jewelry!

Dinner was planned by Road Scholar at E Leaven Food Company and it was quite delicious. After dinner, we met for orientation and introductions to our guides, bus driver and fellow participants in the program. It was looking like a wonderful week ahead!

The next day we would head just down the road to the National Museum of Wildlife Art and later into Grand Teton National Park. "The mountains are calling...."
