Bangalor has got to be my favorite Indian city... after Mumbai of course. I only spend one day there, and that was plenty. Bangalore is a place to live, not a place to visit and in a sense, that's why I liked it.
It was an early arrival - 5:30 am. Sean, my travel companion, who has been a really good sport so far, was a tack cranky that his estimated time of arrival was two hours off. We decided to find a coffee shop and wait for sunrise. According to the LP the botanical gardens opened at sunrise. What better way to stretch out after a night in a third class sleeper train in India.
As we walk out of the train station, we spotted this surprisingly clean and invitingly looking coffee shop. Here is where I had one of those "Can't help but love this country" moments. Wile choking on my sickening sweet coffee I noticed a movement under the tables next to the back wall - it was a mouse, and not a shy one either. It was running back and forth, in at one whole in the wall and out of another. The holes were about the size of my fist, almost perfectly shaped, like in Tom&Jerry cartoon. The significant size of Jerry prompted a swift discussion if it is a mouse or a rat. I thought it was cute, so I stick to my opinion that it was a mouse. In any event, I found it amusing and so tried to take a picture. When the flash went off, Jerry got a stage fright and ran off behind the counter while I was still squatting in the middle of the coffee shop with the camera in my hands. One of the guys working there saw me and...guess what he did?! Grasping my intentions and saddened by my disappointment he ran behind the counter and tried to get the mouse out so I can take a picture! Thanks to this kind and helpful guy, you get to enjoy the two lead shots.
The botanical gardens were marvelous, full of people, walking, praying and exercising at 7am. There was a huge water tank in the middle of the gardens with a running track around. I had a New York Central Park flash back and felt at home in Bangalore.
The rest of the day was full of activities - coffee drinking, internet browsing, manicure and pedicure. We treated ourselfs to an exclusive McDonalds take away dinner on the train. It was Christmas eve.
The train, we though, was going from Bangalore to Hampy. To avoid the early arrival surprise, I asked the conductor when we are scheduled to arrive. He answered - 12:30. 12:30 at night? No, 12:30 the next day. Confusion! Impossible! We looked at the tickets and realized that we had bought a ticket to the wrong station. We are still trying to find out where exactly this station is on the map. Any event, the conductor saved the day and told us where we can get off and transfer to a passenger train at 4:30 am. The news did not crash us of course, quite possibly due to festive rum addition to our McDonalds take away cokes. I'm blessed with exiting Christmases.
