Touch and Go

Caracas has the most beautiful slums. Sprawling for miles and miles are identical square brick houses with frameless, barred windows. Here and there, there is a house painted in baby blue or baby pink. Occasionally white. As we get closer to the airport, the painted houses become brighter in color, like candy. Perhaps they are newer and the colors haven't faded yet, as the slum extends away from the center of town and closer to the airport. The slums are always on the way to the airport. They are there to greet you when you arrive, and they are there to bid you a farewell, one last glimpse of this land before you jet yourself out of it. The slums are really hard to miss. They go for miles and miles, squeezed tightly, the houses cover neatly hill after hill, looking pretty and cheerful from a far and desperate from up-close.
