I couldn't change my flight from Tassi straight to Sydney, so I'm having a couple of days layover in Melbourne. It is a nice town. I am on Brunswick St, sitting by the window of a comfy Italian inspired restaurant/coffee shop. Funky jazz playing in the background. I'm people watching. Ah, the fashions, the diversity, the energy of big cities...! I am feeling almost at home. It hits me that by now, being home is more of a state of mind rather than a place on earth.

Brunswick street is the main drag of Fitzroy, a trendy hood in Melbourn right on the edge between alternative and mainstream. It reminds me of Melrose Place, Avenue A and Shoreditch, all at the same time. It is a long row of two story town houses with live-in quarters upstairs and fashion shops, restaurants, and coffee stores on the first floor - one after another, block after block. Cars and bikes cruse along the street Federation Square

. The place is vibrant with people having brunch, or looking for one. How I miss those long brunches with friends in the Village....

I've noticed that cities make me feel lonely. The bigger the city, the lonelier I feel. Life in the countryside is simple, close to nature. You can be totally alone on a hilltop and wouldn't feel lonely. Just the opposite - you feels one with nature...or at least I do. Cities on the other hand are all about going out and meeting people - for brunch, for dinner, for drink, for coffee, for movie, for walk in the park.... And meeting people usually involves having conversations - about who you met, what you did/thought/felt, what you are planning to do tonight/next weekend/with your life. No friends - no conversations. Even people watching is not as much fun. You can't share neither your nasty nor your naughty comments. You just sit there, having your coffee, contemplating between two choices: either engage yourself with something totally absorbing (like updating your blog) which limits your chances of striking a random conversation with the stranger sitting on the table next to you, or just sit there, looking like someone who is, hum, trying to pick a conversation. And who the hell wants to talk to someone who is just sitting there useless, trying to pick a conversation. Everyone wants to speak to someone interesting, illuminated, charming, purposeful.. Sky skraper

. or at leas I do. Those people are too God damn busy with their life to be picking a small talk with tourists. Catch 22.

Flying to Sydney in 2 days! Can't wait really, although I'm sure I'll be sorry I didn't check out the Melbourne museum (totally do-able alone) as soon as I get on that plane. I need to get going. Go for a run or something. Totally wired after those coffees.
