Today Eva took me to her homeshare in Romnitz so I could see a bit of the German countryside. Michael and Alev met us there. After lunch, we decided to go for a swim, but as there were too many screaming children at the lake in Romnitz, we made our way to Campow, in East Germany.
I felt like such a city-slicker as we drove past a bunch of long-haired cows and asked, "Are those cows?" Once we parked I again showed my farm-animal ignorance as we were walking past a herd of sheep that could just as easily have been goats and I proclaimed, "Wow, look! Sheep! ...right?" I was fascinated by the sheep and as Eva and Michael walked ahead, Alev and I let them lick our hands. They love to lick salty hands, so we stood there giggling until mine started nibbling at my palm. Then, as we were walking away, the sheep followed us in chorus, "Baaaaa!!" The sound they make is not quite what Old Macdonald taught me as a child. Instead it sounded like a chorus of belches, like they were gagging themselves, and Alev and I couldn't stop laughing as they burped along behind us.
At the lake, we swam out in the cool water. None of us could believe that we were swimming on an October evening in Northern Germany. The weather here hadn't been this nice all summer, and everyone joked that I brought the sun with me. I've been so lucky with the weather since I started traveling, but this was the cherry on top. I'd been so nervous about spending Autumn in Germany with nothing but summer clothes in my pack, and here I am swimming in October!
