As soon as I set my bag down in Bruges late this afternoon, my host Jonas asked if I'd like to go to the beach.  Of course I did!

We took a train to Belgium's coast, where I got to swim in the North Sea for the first time in my life.  Okay, I'll be honest... Until a few hours ago I had never even heard of the North Sea, which made it that much more exciting.

The water was frigid but the sand was silky and expansive, so after a quick dip, I became more interested in the sand than in the water.  We began to build a sand castle.  An hour and a few spectators later (small children will be impressed by anything), we had a castle, a moat, a prison, lookout towers, pathways, roads, royal gardens, natural ponds, and a neighboring village.

I rinsed off in the freezing water and we stayed until the sun was setting, my fingernails were purple, and my thumbs had gone numb from the cold.
