Sitting at the open air window, or hanging out the open doorways we watch the scenery pass us by. Once we leave the suburbs of Colombo the clutter and congestion of city life is replaced by the vast green scenery of the countryside. Pavement and cars are replaced with rice paddies and water buffalo.
With 2 hours to go before we arrive at Kandy there is nothing else to do but watch the world pass by our picture frame window our relic of a train snakes it's way through the hills
Upon arriving at Kandy we grab our packs and make our way to the bus station down the street. We meander through a maze of buses looking for one that goes express to Dambulla. As none of read Sinhalese, the signs are of little use to us. Looking lost, a local points us in the right direction to get a shuttle bus to our destination. We pick up a few short eats and settle in for the 2 hour ride.
The station at Dambulla is little more than a crowed collection of buses jammed together along the side of the road. Tired of half a days traveling we cram our packs into the back of a tuck tuck and ask him to take us to our hotel just outside Sigiriya. With the end of our transit day seemingly in sight, our tuck tuck driver pulls to the side of the road, looks over his shoulder and utters the words we do not want to hear "not good". He then looks over his other shoulder and follows up with "very bad". Apparently our 3 wheeled tuck tuck has 2 flat tires.
We empty the tuk tuk and our driver flags down some local help. With a little human jack power we replace the diminutive tires, reload the tuk tuk and make a final push to our destination, The Thick Forest tree houses.
Upon arrival we lug our backpacks up the 1 1/2 story wooden stair case to our humble room perched a top the trunks of 5 trees. We set up our mosquito net, shower while enjoying a view of Sigiriya and then make our way to the dining room, also located in the tree tops, there we enjoy a home made curry dinner with all the fixings. Bellies full we retire to our tree houses for some reading and an early nights rest.
