Where I stayed
After breakfast we make our way to Pettah to check out the markets and temples. The overcast skies temper the day's heat as we make our way on foot through the city. Unlike
Sunday the city was in full swing and traffic is a cacophony horns as cars, buses, motorbikes and tuk tuks jostle for their piece of the pavement. On route we come across a Hindu temple, covered in a dizzying array of brightly coloured Hindu gods. We take a quick tour of the inside (not as impressive as the outside) before making our way towards Pettah.
One we reach our destination, the chaos of the tiny alleys makes the madness of the main streets seem tame by comparison
The yelling of the purveyors and the constant honking of horns overwhelms the senses and makes one wonder if anyone knows what's going on. Friendly locals greet us as we weave our way through the maze of streets and traffic. Looking for some refuge we tuck into a local food market, only to find ourselves enveloped in a sea of new sounds, smells and chaos. Of course, what seams like chaos to us is likely a well practiced ritual to the locals. All of this I'm sure makes logical sense to them.
As exciting as all these new experiences are, the long hours of walking start to add up so we take refuge in the Old Dutch Hospital, which has been converted into a collection of shops and cafes. Half an hour later, cooled down with some chilled lime juice, we hop into a tuck tuck and head over to the national museum to learn a bit about the history of Sri Lanka before we head off to the ancient cities. From here it's back to the hotel for a shower, a bite to eat and some rest before we catch our 7am train to Kandy.
