Where I stayed
vila madalena Hostel
In Sao paulo, its late (23.30) getting a taxi with girls rather than testing the metro late nite.
Just our luck, taxi driver got us close but is a bit lost. Pulls up to try use his Sat nav and as soon as he's stopped police cars pull up front an back saying they want to check his papers.
He looks confused, asks for the money for the trip a few times whilst guys are checking his papers.
You aint getting owt till i see the hostel mate, think he gets the point.
Police escort front and back rounds two streets to where hostel is and were outta there.
Now he doesn't want paying as he's more bothered by the police.
Dont worry folks, a bit dodge i suppose but more annoying due to tiredness than anything.
Inside now, need sleep.
28th Feb - Quick walk round Vila Madalena
Slept well after yesterdays journey, had a bit of a rest after breakfast.
Guys in hostel are ace, marked up a map and sent us on our way to find some cool shops (reight expensive boutique style stuff. 100 quid for a shirt. Hmmmm, No) & local graffiti alleys.
Designs very cool and mid way through strolling a Google street view car turns up doing the area, it seems to pass us at least 3 or 4 times along the way. Street names are in some of photos, so keep a look out in the next few months for us there!
Buffet lunch at Sao Bento restaurant in very cool area.
Plate loaded with salads and nice things, waiter now bringing over a plate with chicken & sausages. nice
Now a plate with steaks, lots of them!
Now some pasta dishes in the style of swill rolls, meaty!
Shit how much is this gonna cost!? Sod it, got a free taxi last nite!
Rain is insane in Sao Paulo, not seen walls of water moving towards me like that for a long time.
Cards in the common room it is for the evening..
1st March - Booking tickets & walking round Centro
Right, off to get tickets for bus to Buenos Aires as they seem to be selling out.
Cant go on the 3rd as planned, so im going on 4th (Friday nite) getting there on 6th (Sunday lunch).
Its the biggest one out of the lot so i needs me a book and some snacks!
Forgot my passport and im going into another country. FOOL.
Its OK they've booked it with driving license and i just need to turn up early with docs to get it authorised.
Right, me the girls and Kyle (just met at hostel and he's only got 12 hours in Sao Paulo are goin walking.
Start in the middle i guess.
Cathedral huge, very impressive. locals bit intense. Move along.
Off looking for the market municipal, hope theres some cool stuff there....
Long walk in and out of streets, girls got some jewelry, market is for food only.
Oh well, lunch time then. Cheap and tasty. just the way i like it.
Where's this big tower i've heard so much about then? there's alot of big towers.........
Rain, rain, rain. WET
Ah, the tower! we look like a reight mess going up this swanky tower.
Dripping wet, in flip flops. Everyone else is in suits which look like they cost more than my flight to brazil!
Viewing platform only open 15.00 till 16.00. its 14.10, Doh again. and it doesnt open when it rainy as to dangerous.
Guess we'll give it a miss.
There's a huge book shop somewhere close, im sure Louis said so(Sound hostel guy, they all are actually!) Cant find it, but found library. Nice i guess, but cant get in apart from Cafe.
Not really what i need right now.
To the park!!!!!!!!!! Rain not as bad, lets walk it as buses still not very clear about where they go.
Nearly there, can see it. no pavement tho.
Keep walking, gotta be a way. map wet now, falling apart in me hands.
Rain coming down like the wrath of an unlikely, all knowing, angry creator.
I reckon it just rains really hard in Brazil.
So close but not hanging about, any bus going our way?
Yup, hope on... ah no, just come from that way. off again.
Walked so far already today dont think we can go on anymore and Katie's fingers are turning yellow and numb.
Dried off and now time to go meet up with an old friend.
Back into cool part of Vila Madalena to "Posto 6" (on the opposite corner to Sao Bento)
They're a little late but im having a beer watching volleyball on the big screen projected on the building on the opposite side of road.No problems here!
Has it been over 5 years? yeah it must be... but i seem to be the only one who has aged.
Great to have a chat and couple of drinks with Ana and her friend, they both look great and i cant really believe im actually in their town this time round.
I told you id make it over here one day, it just took a little longer than i thought!
Maybe i'll pass through with the Hotrock tour in April, Im not sure on the route for this area but for now it's goodbye.
Thanks for coming out to see me girls, its been a blast!!!!
2nd March - Bye bye girls & a little Rob time (not like that, you dirty buggers)
Final time of seeing Katie & 'The Claw' they going back up to Rio for Carnival then quick few stops in South America before heading back to London, then onto Asia for a couple of months.
Happy travels ladies and i'll see you again sometime, somewhere.
John & Sophie off into town to book bus tickets, might meet up in Japan town for some lunch.
Its raining again, hard. Time to catch up on blog, postcards and some washing.
Nowhere to dry anything and I've just washed all me growlers and a couple of t-shirts (i only have 4) hmmm, hope they don't smell....
went out to jazz club round the corner from hostel. was nice but Bossanova is so chilled out was more like being in a elevator than watching a live band. just the one drink then bed.
3rd March - Early start and back into the centre
Off to the big park in the centre of Sao Paulo today with Olivier & Vanessa, its still raining but not half as bad.
Went into the Afro Museum which was really interesting.
displays about the time of slave trade and mass change of population, to the sucess of black community within the arts & sports.
Interesting art by guy called Washington Silvera, no pics as would let take camera in.
Back to the hostel after a long walk in park and this evening its off to the samba club with the guys. Its a little run down building opposite the cemetary with just a few stools in front of a window and a tiny bar in the corner.
Music was fantastic and the dancing by locals was out of this world!
met some nice folk and few wierdos but hey, thats what its all about.
Headed off to get late nite snack with guys and girl met in bar whose local and promising good food, finally got to try some Acai, with chopped banana & granola. Bloody Delicious!!!
4th March - Last day in Sao Paulo
Woke up to find someon had nicked my camera from my bag last nite. first time i have forgot to lock up anything and its gone. Bag at hostel reception but no camera.
Guys not being to helpful so off to police station to file report. hour later bit wet and walk in to see them with my camera.
They have cctv and finally looked at it, only to find that night watch guy from last night had tried to stash my camera in a void in the front counter. Glad i hassled them a bit before going to police.
Think they knew sumit was goin on with one of staff but now they have proof. sort it out guys!
right off to get bus to BA its only 33 hours, how hard can it be................................
