The Spanish coast toward Aquilas is incredible... rocky, raw, cliff covered, with soooooo many scary deep craggly tunnels allowing roads to pass along the edge of the sea.
Sharp drops down to the mediterranean, amazing sunsets and brilliant skies. Lots of tiny beach, fishing towns. Good riding... Places to camp where there are absolutely no people for miles and miles... It is warm, sunny, and the few buildings you do see out here in this rocky barren landscape toward Aquilas are what we call the ´´impossible buildings´´-- built on sharp edges and slants, directly INTO deep hard rocky cliffs, seemingly suspended on stilts and lacking flat foundations, embedded into the hillsides, tucked on angles, with never-ending seaside views. The tunnels we speak of were scary at first. Just imagine barreling downhill into a long unknown dark tunnel, not knowing how long it is, traffic not really seeing you, and feeling deafened by the roar of the few motorists and the echoes of the ocean. Itoe really scary and neat. But most tunnels luckily have a little road that by-passes them, the scenic by-way, which hugs the mountain. We took these happily time and time again. On one such by-way we stopped to watch some intense rock climbers scaling a sheer cliff over hanging the Mediterranean. Just having some quality climbing times after work. Imagine that- it was SO so neat. Lots of cool secret places and things to see along the coastal road... We also stopped by a craggly roadside home made shrine: the shrine to the Virgin of the Sea, the Sea of Love ofcourse- so we left her our bubble gum bits and some scribbled words.
In Aquilas we decided to take the train to Murcia, then Alicante, and then Barcelona -because the alternative was riding ourbikes through yucky, uber-developed, Spanish Riviera hotel and condo hell from here on. We decided our time would be better spent riding in French hills and Italy and on, elsewhere- the commercialism of the rivieras -both French and Spanish- are a bit repulsive and uninteresting.
