The pathos of the traveling pants

(Amy)
It's always interesting to see how people define their identity. Some people seem defined by their jobs, or by where they went to school, or by their choice of friends. The definitions often seem incomplete or lacking; however, right now, I am feeling wholly identified by my pants. I say this not because I've been watching too much Italian TV (see previous blog) but because I've worn the same pair of pants for 81 of the last 120 days. You might have seen them, as they're in every picture Jim has taken of our family. You certainly won't see them after we get back to the U.S. because they will have combusted by then. At soccer practice last week, Alex asked why I was staring at the woman standing nearby, and I told him I wasn't staring at her, I was staring at her jeans. I thought about offering her a few euros to let me try them, but my Italian vocabulary did not extend to a clear explanation of my proposal, and I feared the consequences of the likely misunderstanding.
