Where I stayed
When we went on the subway, I realized we didn't even need tickets. We had some that the hotel gave us, but no one checked and there were no rotating bars you had to walk through. But there were ticket machines outside the subway stops and people bought them anyways. I think they are just really honest there. Even in our hotel, there was a bar that said "just write down whatever you take." Nobody monitered the bar or anything, they just trusted us.
During our time in Lausanne, we went to a cathedral, walked around the old town, and ate some really yummy crepes and fondues. The cathedral was called the Cathedrale de Laussane. I would call it semi-gothic style, with gothic architecture like pointed arches and detail but not as elaborite as it usually is. We took old stone stairs up to three different floors. The first had a couple of huge bells, the second had several medium sized bells, and the top had no bells but a great view. Nobody else was there on the floors. On the first floor there was a little area with a door in the middle, so I looked in one of the windows. My mom said "don't look in there, that's where the hunchback stays."
"Yeah, right," I said. "Every gothic church has to have a hunchback to ring the bells." I looked in the window again for a second before gasping and jerking away, exclaiming "Ahhh, there really is a hunchback!" Soph, beside me, squealed and ran away before she realized I was laughing.
In the old town, we shopped a bit and got our cheese fondue. I'm a huge fan of fondues - the Melting Pot has always been my favorite restaurant. Just like in France you will be in crepe heaven, in Switzerland you will be in fondue heaven. It's where they originated. In the Melting Pot, they will give you a choice between tons of different types of fondues, and you will have about ten different things to dip in it. Here in Switzerland, you simply say "Fondue, please." They are all made with gruyere cheese, emmental cheese and white wine. Nothing more. They'll bring the fondue to your table on just a little portable burner, set a basket of bread next to it and give each person a fondue stick. I LOVE the fondues here. They're delicious! The only setback to me is the smell. Some people like it, but I hate the smell of all fancy cheeses. The taste makes it worth it though.
Since this town is really close to France, not only do they speak French but they also have really good crepes. We went to a super expensive crepery and I had what is possibly the best crepe of my life. It had raspberry preserves, fresh raspberries, raspberry ice cream and raspberry sauce drizzled over it. Later we went to a park on the lake front.
After our few days in Lausanne we packed up and got on a boat to go to another lakeside town; Montreux.
