Where I stayed

Today we went game driving in the Ngorongoro Crater. The crater (or caldera) was formed by a volcano that collapsed millions of years ago, and there is now life in it. Our very last thing on the animal list to see was the black rhino, and we saw 2! At a great distance though. The Ngorongoro Crater is about the only place you can see those. We also saw 2 eagles (not sure what type), many herds of water buffalo, 25 hyenas, and 15 lions. We saw a single lion make a kill!! It killed a wildebeest. We also saw a cheetah kill a wildebeest in the Serengeti, and only about one in 20 tours sees a kill or even an attempt, but we saw two! That was the most exciting thing we saw in the crater. You'd think it wouldn't hold that many animals, but it's about 120 sq miles. In total of the Serengeti and the crater (4 days), we saw: 31 hyenas, 3 leopards, 2 black rhinos, 3 eagles, 2 cheetahs, 45 lions (yes, 45!). Those were just the animals we decided to count. We stayed at Sopa Lodge, which was right on the rim of the crater. It was probably the nicest hotel I've ever stayed in. As soon as we walked in last night, they were ready with steamy washcloths for our faces and holding trays of refreshing drinks. It was beautiful to watch the sunset on the edge of the crater. Today in the afternoon, we left to head back to Arusha. We are staying there tonight and leaving bright and early tomorrow morning for South Africa.
