Tents packed up, breakfast done it was time to commence day 1 of our Western Sahara crossing. Leaving camp at the reasonable hour of 9am we headed for the city of Agadir following a coastal road some of the way which offered glimpses of pristine beaches some where the surfers were out in force. Never really considered Morocco a surfing destination but the breaks actually looked quite sweet, maybe that's just cause I've been living in the UK for too long!
Arriving in Agadir first stop was McDonalds for the all important last supper as we weren't due to reach another one until South Africa - a fair few months away to say the least. Sufficiently full we continued on to the supermarket for cook group shop and the all important water restock. As we were heading into the desert it was advised we each have at least 10lt as from here on in it was all village well pumps for us.
Trying to spend our last Dirham I bought two icecream cones as am totally addicted with the peach one. The girl serving me was thrilled to meet an Australian so we chatted away for a while. She asked how I liked Agadir and I tried to explain that we were just passing through but she didn't seem to comprehend this only laughing when I said driving and Mauritania.
Anyway long story short turns out she has a very large house and she would like me to come and visit. Nice one. So she ducks behind the counter and reappears to grab my hand and shove a piece of paper in it with her address and email. Bless her. Thankfully some other customers came so I thanked her profusely and returned to the truck to share the story.
All aboard we left Agadir with stocks refilled, Rachel buying a lovely pair of barbie pink shower shoes, and continued our drive south passing through next to no towns and encountering fewer and fewer trees. It's now 4.10 and we probably have another hour or so of driving before pulling off road to bush camp.
Aina, Martin and I are on cook group - in the hope of keeping it simple dinner tonight is veg risotto with sausages for meat lovers followed by pear and plum crumble. Mmm Mmm. Lets just hope the weather starts to warm up at night now. So sick of being curled up in a ball trying to keep warm!!
Continued... later
Unfortunately my preyers for warmer weather were not answered as bush camp was back up at altitutde. We were meant to camp by a resouvoir but the entrance was blocked by police so we pressed on in the dark before pulling off road. Our alternative involved scrapping by a tree and parking up on a minefield of rocks, a pleasant prospect for Jamie and his 1cm think foam mattress.
Freezing our hands off we were pleased to have a cooking success - the crumble most definitely the piece da resistonce. As it was so cold as soon as "dork o'clock" hit, being 9pm, most gathered up their things and went to curl up inside their tents. I don't think anyone will be sad to leave here in the morning!
