Thailand: Bangkok - Water Fights
Entry 2 of 29 | show all | print this entry |
Hello Bangkok, sunshine, friendly people and a huge sigh of relief.
Unbeknown to us we had conveniently arrived on Thai New Year. In the taxi from the airport we were told "Some splashing water today", cool we thought. Drop bags off at hotel and get in auto rickshaw... driving down the street we proceed to get ambushed on either side by people throwing huge buckets of water at us and other people in auto rickshaws firing at us with super soakers. Some splashing water... it was more like a drowning.
Back at the hotel we have showers, put on clean clothes and walked out into the street.... lambs to the slaughterhouse - we were drenched within seconds and covered in clay.... stupidly we hadn't even thought about it whilst back at the hotel otherwise obviously wouldn't have bothered showering etc. So had lunch, ran back to hotel to dump cameras, bought massive super soakers and went into battle.
It was soooo much fun!! For those who know Bangkok all the streets around Rambuttri/Khoa San Rd were closed. Stalls lined the street selling alcohol - 4 beers and vodka redbull buckets for 100B (under 2 quid!!!). Music blared from everywhere making mini mosh pits in the centre of the street - techno, rock whatever - there were even bands playing on the backs of huge trucks. Everyone was armed with a super soaker and/or a bucket of wet clay soaking people as they walked by or rubbing clay over your arms and face. The stall owners threw buckets of ice cold water at you so you were constantly trying to dodge them or fire at them and run away before the icy water could hit. It was just fantastic - and it went on for the first 2 days we were there.
First day it was just Oliver and I so called it a night at the reasonable hour of 10pm or so but the second day... dear dear me.... that just went pear shaped.
Oliver's mate Ben had flown in from Melbourne for a friends wedding so was at a hotel with the wedding couple (very nice English couple) and another friend from OZ. We joined them in the morning... went and got them armed up with water guns and headed into the war zone. Once again the streets were alive with clay covered tourists and locals alike. Bands played in the street, vendors threw ice cold water at you and fun was to be had all around. We stayed there for the best part of the day, stopping into restaurants for food before heading back to Ben's hotel and making ourselves at home in the bar then in the pool. The hours ticked by and before we knew it the sun was coming up and we were all still in the pool, unless you were Ben who was splashing about in the water fountain out front of the hotel entrance...still armed with his gun. Funny.
Needless to say the rest of the day was a write off spent changing hotel rooms in order to be back in air conditioned comfort and swearing never to drink again.... until that night of course when we returned to Ben's hotel where we were greeted by laughing bar staff asking how we were feeling. Hmmmmm not too good. All 5 of us headed out to dinner, wondered through the markets and witnessed girls doing things with ping pong balls and darts that just ahhh shouldn't be done.
Next day Ben and his fellow corrupters flew out so we were left to wonder the streets of Bangkok once more... this time keeping clean and dry. Didn't get in any of the sights as main reason for going to Bangkok this time was to see Ben. We'll be back in a couple of weeks so will do touristy things then.
On Friday 18th it was Happy Birthday Oliver, Goodbye Bangkok and Good Morning Vietnam.
