My first experience of ‘real’ American life comes this morning. I tag along with Whitney to classes at Texas Tech University, where she is majoring in Anthropology. It quickly becomes clear that Texas Tech campus is very picturesque, lots of green grass and old buildings. I believe it’s the second largest university campus in the USA. Student-wise they have about 28,000, which would be similar to a typical university in the UK.

My first class is archaeology, where I learn about old bones. The whole atmosphere takes me right back to 2002 – 2005, when I was a university student. I keep my mouth shut to hide my English accent, I think I fit in very well, nobody questions me being there. After that lecture we have one on Homicide.

Later in the day Whitney takes me on a tour of Lubbock. I discover that there is in fact a small lake, and what could almost be called hills, although these are manmade. Lubbock sticks rigidly to the grid network, with very few exceptions. The concept of city centre that we have in the UK isn’t at all apparent, I get told that there is a downtown area, with some larger buildings, it isn’t significant though. In Lubbock there are perhaps a handful of four or five story buildings, there aren’t any skyscrapers. People live typically in single story houses, although the modern apartment complex appears to have got a foothold here, possibly aided by the large student population.
