It’s a great feeling to wake up in a proper bed after a dozen or so nights in a bunk. Me and Neil decided to pay for tonight’s accommodation meaning we can leave our belongings in the room. We had planned to do some sight-seeing in Austin during the day, but our lack of a car and the 5 miles to the centre of town means we end up hanging out in the local car packed retail park. After another trek to cross the road we are in Target buying shorts.

One thing that does stand out is the fact that in Subway the staff are predominately white American. This is slightly unusual as everything I’ve ever bought in the USA has involved handing over cash to what I presume to be a first generation immigrant stuck on a minimum wage job until they can climb the ladder to something better. The Subway woman is very friendly and we enjoy $5 (2.80ish) foot long subs.

This evening our two American ‘tour guides’ arrive to show us Texas. They are Whitney, who I met in Spain and who has visited me in England, and her best friend Ashton, who neither Neil or I have previously met.

We eat out at a Mexican restaurant in a distant suburb of Austin. Mexican food is big in this part of the world, quite possibly as we’re only a few hours from the Mexican border. One of the main things that I’ve noticed since arriving in this country is the amount of Spanish spoken. Europeans who decide to learn Spanish should certainly add the USA to the list of countries where it will be extremely useful in.
