She just wouldn't go down....the alpha female fought the drugs like I have never seen before. Finally we were able to take the tracking collar from her neck and give her some freedom. We waited with her until 4am to make sure she woke up safely. In the meantime, a huge male lion came in on to the carcass, but we couldn't dart him due to the conditions and vegetation. It's better not to dart and make certain the animal is safe, rather than shoot and perhaps loose them in the bush. Waiting in the dark, with the large moon illuminating the scene, is an incredible feeling. You see and hear so much, including a white rhinocerous that walked through the proceedings, completely unaware he was being watched.
