Just when you think things are ok, it turns out that they are not.
My parents at home have become so used to working as my postmasters that on arrival of my bank statement they opened it as usual to put it in to my file.
Except this time the statement showed that over a period of 10 days while I was in hospital, some bastard in Johannesburg has stolen all my money. I now have less than 1000 rand to my name.
Having eaten at expensive restaurants, bought clothes at places I cannot afford, been to the pharmacist, blown the equivalent of 100 pounds at the supermarket and stocked up on some cd's, they decided to invest in a car stereo system worth 1000 pounds.
I can't tell you my reaction, but the last thing I expected to be doing on a Saturday night was to be waiting by a telephone for my bank in the UK to call.
I really love this counry, but today it made me cry. Yes, it is only money. But in reality, if you live here, you lurch from one disaster to the next. Today I am fed up of South Africa. I am fed up of people taking advantage, of stealing and taking and never thinking what the consequences might be. I am fed up of the lack of respect. I am fed up that people think they have the right to abuse other without care.
In short, I hope that they enjoy the clothes and food and music and stereo, but I also hope that the medicine was for something more than a headache.
Thank you South Africa for yet another wonderful day.
