It always hits me so late - the fact that I am leaving. The packing was done so far in advance (for once) that I had plenty of time to walk around the house saying goodbye to everything. Mum had already left for her tour to Ireland and my sister had called to say farewell, so it was just me, dad and the cat. I rarely get upset, but over the last few years, saying goodbye to Dodgercat has always made me tearful. There's just something about him, one in a million. So I once again explained that my room now belonged to him, that he was still my favourite cat, and most importantly, that he was in charge until I got back.

Dad wanted to leave early to make sure we didn't hit traffic on the way to Birmingham. We got there in plenty of time and I was glad, as I usually get my rucksack emptied by security. I was expecting it this time, especially as I only have a one way ticket and a student visa. But, how wrong can a girl be - everything sailed through without a second glance, so we went for a Ribena, avoiding the kids that seem to inhabit airports just to get in the way of people with trolleys.

So, time rolled on and I said goodbye to dad, bought myself an African adaptor and made my way to the plane. Lovely big seats thanks to Lufthansa, with a tv on the seat infront. It really doesn't take much to please me I realised, which could be a good thing in months to come, when things will be tight to say the least. My happiness was just about at it's peak when the map showing the route came on the big screen. Africa here I come!
