August 2 ...
If it pops into my head today, it appears in this space. The latest 1-minute English lesson on the train is as follows: -How do you do? -How are you doing? -How have you been? *** I went to the WBA light flyweight title fight tonight at Yokohama Arena between Venezuelan veteran Juan Landaeta and Japanese up-and-comer Koki "The Pitbull of Osaka" Kameda. Kameda won the vacant title by split decision and the home crowd went nuts, roaring with delight, banging on drums, waving flags, high-fiving their neighbors in the stands (OK, that was me. Kameda dropped to the canvas in the first round but was quick to his feet and landed enough quality jabs and hooks and combinations to earn the higher score on 2 of the 3 judges' scorecards.
When the fight was over, Kameda wept as he was interviewed in the ring. Moments before, he was lifted up by the reigning grand sumo camp. Talk about a proper sendoff! *** Ninety minutes after the fight, I was on the train returning to Tokyo. Already, the fight photos and story were posted on the on-train news station for one and all to see. News travels fast, eh? Then a picture of a Tokyo Yomiuri Giants slugger (a lefty) was shown with a quick rundown on Wednesday's game. Seconds later, a photo of two Israeli soldiers and a tank were seen. The photo was striking in that it looked as if it was coming right at ya, and the Israeli flag commanded your attention on the screen as it dominated the image.
*** My camera will do most of the talking today. My brain is mush after trying to understand the 27 different plans and options and exceptions for my new cell phone while at the electronics store today. More thumbnails ...
