The Flight
Entry 2 of 32 | show all | print this entry |
After a day comprised of last minute errands and packing I finally arrived safely at the Tom Bradley terminal in LAX. The last time I flew out of this terminal was in October of 2000 on EVA Air to Thailand. I had forgotten how different this terminal was in comparison to the rest of the airport. With only foreign carriers, there is a much different tempo and make-up of travelers. Many are foreigners and those of us Americans bold enough to fly with a foreign air carrier....actually not bold, smarter! I was instantly reminded of how much better service is on many non-U.S. airlines. Not only was I well treated at the check-in counter, in flight service and amenities were great. In coach I received a kit with free headphones, earplugs and an eye mask. This was a pleasant surprise after my recent flights to Washington DC where I was lucky to get a drink. For those contemplating a flight to South America, I can whole heartedly recommend LAN Peru/Chile as a great airline. As I settled in to my middle three seats on LAN's Boeing 767, I contemplated something that had struck me in the waiting lounge. There are a lot of Japanese people on this flight. I normally wouldn't have thought twice about something like this but given Peru recently had a Japanese president (Fujimori), I wondered if there wasn't some sort of connection. Is there a big Japanese community in Peru? I guess I'll find out! I noticed an elderly lady saying the rosary as we prepared to take off. It was strangely comforting...it reminded me of my first flight when I was a kid. My mom carried a rosary given to her by my great aunt Charlsie. At the time I had thought it strange given we weren't Catholic, but in time I realized it comforted my mom and now it was comforting me. Once in the air the flight attendants began to serve dinner and the Son of the Mask began to play on the video monitors....I was in for a long eight hours.
