I'd been living and working in Deadwood for a couple of years before I found out about Saint Ambrose's. It turns out that there are even a few residents who don't know about this place.

Mount Moriah Cemetery is the city's most famous burial ground. That's where all the famous people are buried: Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock and the like. But Mount Moriah was the city's Protestant graveyard. A second cemetery was constructed by the city's Catholics at about the same time. But because it didn't have the same tourist appeal as Mount Moriah, Saint Ambrose's was slowly neglected.

Which makes for a very eerie experience today. They're beginning to finally restore the aging burial ground, but it's still a pretty creepy place today. I went and saw the place before they had done anything. Downed trees lay strewn across graves, retaining walls were busted open and there were unmarked depressions everywhere. Even after a little cleanup work, a lot of these things still remain.

One of the most striking monuments is a statue of an angel erected to honor the memory of two-year-old Oscar Stanley Rewman, who died July 6, 1891. It's positively beautiful, and really captures the essence of Victorian Deadwood.

It's just a couple blocks up from Main Street, and is easily walkable. I'll put the locator pin as close to the cemetery access as possible.

I couldn't remember the name of this cemetery! My Grandmother just across the road. My brothers and I often would walk through the cemetery when we were kids and tell ghost stories. I remember when the angel was vandalized.
