Our arrival in Kuching was a mere week before the apparently world-famous Rainforest Music Festival. We did not know this. But we soon found out that it most definitely affected us as we walked with our 15kg-or-so backpacks up and down the main drag, late at night, being turned away time after time because (to quote an old quote) there was 'no room at the inn'.

Eventually we found ourselves infront of a non-descript cement building, with the glowing letters 'Cozy Inn' hung above the doorway. Sure, why not? So up the stairs we climbed and lucky for us (although 'lucky' is still a debatable word...) they had a room free. A room with a single bed, all the doubles were taken.

Oli and I have no trouble squeezing onto a single in most cases, but what really made this interesting is the bed basically WAS the room. It took up 99% of this windowless room, in which the bathroom leaked, the carpet was soggy, and the toilet refused to flush. Oh, the joys of traveling. Needless to say, we got up early the next day and made it our mission to find another place, ANY other place to stay. We ended up having to splurge and stay at the very comfortable (and mansion-sized compared to 'Cozy') Waterfront Lodge. Big bed, balcony, working shower/toilet and free wifi. Ahh, heaven.

As for the town itself, Kuching has a very touristy, Niagara-on-the-Lake of Borneo kind of feel. Everything is clean, pretty, and costs a lot. The sunsets are gorgeous but beyond that it's a bit boring.

Our next couple of days will be in transit, heading East towards Mulu Park. Small dirty town after small dirty town.. should be fun!
