We finally escaped Sihanoukville's evil clutches and took a night bus to Siem Reap to check out Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples. Our plan was to get up early to watch the sun rise from the top of Angkor Wat. Yeeeeah... that didn't happen. Surprisingly, we woke up on time to meet our tuk-tuk driver (4:30am!). What we didn't know was that Angkor Wat had recently closed access to the very top in order to preserve the ruins. Ontop of that, it turned out to be a very cloudy day and so the sunrise was nowhere to be seen that morning. Tired and grumpy we drank a coffee from a nearby drinks stall and attempted to wake up and enjoy the day.

Overall, I wasn't that impressed by Angkor Wat. I know, I know... 8th wonder of the world blahblahblah. I was disappointed that we couldn't climb to the top because Oli had been talking about the steep steps and how cool the view was etc. ever since we planned to see it (he's been before). Thankfully, the next two temples I found absolutely breathtaking.

Our driver took us to Angkor Thom, probably my favourite out of the three we visited. The entire temple is made up of towers with buddha faces built into it, kind of pieced together with different blocks of stone. They were so beautiful, it was hard to believe it was all built 1000yrs ago. I loved walking around the ruins and seeing all the faces hidden in the walls and towers. Very cool!

After that we headed to Ta Prohm, where apparently parts of the film Tomb Raider were filmed. It was falling down all over the place, and huge trees with giant tree roots had grown over the walls and through the grounds. The effect was like being in a fantasy movie, it was incredible to see how time had taken over what must have been a solid structure so long ago.

That was our three for the day, there are plenty more (you can buy a week pass if you have the money!) but those three are the main ones to see. It was still before noon when we got back to the guesthouse and we were super exhausted so it's probably a good thing that we didn't try and fit any more into our day.
