I never saw Auckland coming. Almost every night I find myself out boozing at the pub, or clubbing in town, or recovering from clubbing in town by boozing at the pub. If Wellington took all my spending money with Flat Whites from Fidels then Auckland is now up the annual GDP from Ghana from my Amex.
I am grateful again for a bed at someone's house, this time Tom and Ryan. Theirs is the ultimate bachelor pad, stumbling distance to Karangahape Road, widescreen plasma screen, Sky, and an inexplicable man smell (Just kidding.) On Wednesday I head out with them to see the recently voted world Number One DJ, Paul van Dyk who is in town. The atmosphere is electric with the crowd really into it despite it being a week day, and although the London gig I saw him play at a few weeks prior was bigger, this was definitely better. Afterwards, we head back to Claire's for I understand the obligatory Auckland post-gig spa. It's good to catch up with people I haven't seen for ages including many not since I left new Zealand almost 5 years ago.
Friday we head to a party in town with the dress code being white, which turns into a flop but I still end up have a great time. Saturday follows a similar theme as I miss my flight to Christchurch due to a mix up in pickup times to get me to the airport, but instead am invited to another night out at a club which turns into a brilliant night catching up with more old friends, and making several new.
Finally, Sunday, I climb into the plane, ready for 10 days of detox in Christchurch. After living it up in Wellington and Auckland, my body and my wallet need it.
