Sun. 21st Jun.Kostanay - Chelyabinsk
Many thanks Aselle, for recommending Hotel Medeu. It was really lovely as was our adventure through your homeland.  How sorry we were that we didn't manage to meet up with you - but you never know though, one day you might end up holidaying in New Zealand...
We arrived at the Russian border at 10.45am and sailed through at 2pm. Aaaah, what a doddle that was with the major holdup being everything closing up for an hour at lunchtime. Not that we minded though, as we were very close to the front, in the car queue, our thermos flasks full and our picnic basket full of goodies. We're learning! After the official lunch break we were taken through to complete various documents, one important one being for Russian car insurance. That was a bit of a problem and we were wishing we had bought it at one of three booths on the Kazakh. side of the border. Seeing three in a row there should have told us something! Not to worry, the border officials were really nice about it (probably thinking, 'dumb Kiwis') and after having us empty out the truck, letting the drug dogs sniff through it and checking underneath with mirrors, should we have secreted anything, they waved us through into Russia. Yay, let another adventure begin.
It was only a short drive to our hotel in Chelyabinsk so we stopped of for a (real) coffee at a roadside cafe. (Not at all like the flash cafes you frequent)! And, once again, our wheel cover attracted all the attention, not us.
As we  pulled into our hotel Dave notice a couple of motor bikes parked alongside bearing the Scottish flag and upon making enquires, we eventually met Gordon and Tom who are travelling from Scotland around the world. Really nice guys, retired policemen and doing a charity trip for a disabled Bikers. (www.transglobemoto.com). We met up with them (they are heading to Kazakhstan tomorrow) later in the evening for dinner...at an Irish Pub with the menus in English! A great night, swapping tales and hints. Keep safe, guys.
We stayed at Hotel Meridian, a lovely hotel with unlimited WiFi (such a bonus). Olga, the hotel receptionist, who speaks amazing English, made us feel so welcome. Thanks, Olga, we can thoroughly recommend your hotel.

p.s. We have posted the pic's for the last few days.

Back Home
Hi dear Cables,we arrived home from Perth & WA early
Sat morning after a great 3 weeks away.Drove over 4000kms and covered quite a chunk of the sth west corner of the state incl Kalgoorlie(no gold left for us!)and Margaret River area vineyards & Choc & Cheese factories all having tastings.Lucky we were staying with our friends who live in the area and they took us to some amazing places. So enjoying all your adventures- we could not access internet for past 10 days so had gotten behind with your news and photos.Seeing photos of the Truck in these far away places its hard to believe that only about 12 wks ago it was here in our driveway. You both look good in this last photo.Only 6 wks now till we fly to LHR so hope our paths will cross before you return to NZ.
Hey Dave we were held up in Perth for 2nhalf hrs on Fri night due to ice forming on the wings while plane was on tarmac so after trying to flush it off with fire hoses they put another 40 tonnes of warm fuel in wings to melt the ice.Ground staff wanted to scrape it off but ANZ engineers would not allow that.We were told it was unheard of there but
W.A.was experiencing an extremely cold weather snap that day.Anyway another fast 6nquarter hr flt home was good. Its very cold here in Auck right now.Lots of sun but no good out of it.Looking forward to your next instalment/photos Love from LorRog
