It is said that Nelson gets more sunshine than any other town in New Zealand. We left the rain behind us in Christchurch and after a beautiful 7+-hour drive through wine country and along the rugged east coast, arrived here to clear blue skies and very low humidity. I can see why this town is the number one South Island destination for New Zealanders. It's a lovely city with a beautiful beach and many amenities. I could see spending much more time here.

After finalizing our reservations for a bus ride from Nelson and then a water taxi to the Abel Tazman track tomorrow, we spent today at Nelson's Saturday Market, where Jim was able to prove he had been truthful about all of NZ's produce, especially fruit--we stocked up.
Nights are cool here--in the mid-50s. But today the high was about 80--warm enough to swim in the ocean, which was warmer than the air.
We hope this weather holds for our 3-day tramp that begins tomorrow.

The News- From Sidney (Not Sydney)
We have had a lot of fun in Nelson. We went to the beach, played mini golf, and explored a bustling marketplace. I think New Zealand ice cream is the best in the world! There's a flavor called Strawberry Ripple, and it's just the right texture with just a hint of citrus. The market had all kinds of things- fruit, crafts, food... I managed to get in a dip at the beach, which was fun, although it's not like the Atlantic. Anyway, I have to go. Bye!
