Hi everyone,

It's been tough getting ready for the trip. I've been orgainising clothes, packing backpacks, and belive it or not, scrubbing shoes! New Zealand has a great ecological footprint and wants it to stay that way, so you have to clean simply everything of dirt, organic material, and anything else that might introduce foreign organisms. At least we won't have to do it at the airport!
I had a hard time choosing which book to take, which should be no suprise to those people who know me, but I finally settled on a encyclopedia. No, not that kind. It's a little book that has info on just everything. Glaciers, rugby, and chemistry are only a few of the topics contained in this little marvel. (A note to everyone at MDCS that's reading this: it was a present from Colyn's mom. Thanks a lot, Ellen!)
The TSA regulations about not taking liquids and weapons on the plane are kind of annoying. We couldn't even take a water bottle with water in it! Of course, I'll make sure to bring my Swiss Army knife. (Just joking, TSA people reading this! Really!)

Thats about it for now.

Got your first message
Hi Mary Ellen, Jim and Sydney:
I just got my first message though it seems like it's your third entry.
Yot got it right. Clean those boots, tent and sleeping bag. Don't bring any food in the country. The flight is OK. And here's a hint for water on the plane.
I take an empty quart water bottle. I go through security with no problems and then I fill it up at the water fountain or bathroom sink.

Enjoy your flight.

Hi Steve,

Actually, yes. We are going to Sydney. We might even see the operahouse! As for the homesickness, I don't think I'll have much of a problem. If I do, I'll definitely consult you. That boy who took care of the birds... was he named Jackson? If so he was in my cabin, and that might explain a lot.
