My next visit in Austria was to the city of Salzburg. This visit only intensified my desire to return to Austria someday. While it was grey and overcast the whole time I was there, I was none the less struck by its beauty. The glimpses of the mountains through the couds taunted and teased me all the while encouraging me to return someday when the weather is warmer and the sun is out.

During my short stay in Salzburg (a day and a half), I decided to join two tours to make the most of my time. I went to some of the largest ice caves in the world which were a bit touristy but cool. We took a short ride in a cable car straight up the mountain and then did about a half and hour of hiking to get to this natural wonder.

My next excursion was unbelievable cheesy but fun as well. I went on the Sound of Music tour. We sang along with the movie soundtrack as we were shuttled in and around the city to see some of the locations from the movie. While I drew the line at skippping (I wasn't drunk enough for that one), I saw Mirabell gardens where they sang parts of Do Re Me, the homes they used for the exteriors of the Von Trapp home, the gazebo in which they sang 16 going on 17, Maria's abby and the church in which Maria and the Captain were married. This tour is a must for any fan of the movie.

As I was leaving the clouds started to clear and the sun made a guest appearance. I was tempted to say another couple of nights but I had already booked my accomodations for my next stop so I headed off to Bavaria.
