Berlin is a city that is so full of history that your brain spins from being overwhelmed. It is struggling with its past, present and its future. I arrived on the day of their nation election. Like America in the 2000 election it was too close to call and at the time of this entry (9/23) the leader if the country was still yet to be determined.

Germany is still dealing with it's past. There are bits of the Berlin wall still in tact and memorials to many different groups, the number of which seem to be multiplying on a regular basis. One of their newest memorials is dedicated to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Everytime something new is built or something is slated to be torn down or destroyed there is controversy and a debate rages on. The Jewish Holocaust memorial is controverial because of how it looks but also because it excludes others who were victims of the Nazis. In addition (later in the development of the memorial), it was discovered that the anti-graffiti coating on the memorial was actually made by a company whose sister company produced the gas used in the gas chambers in the death camps of World War 2.

On my worldwind tour of Berlin, I got to see checkpoint Charlie, the ultramodern Sony Center, the Reichstag (German parliment), Brandenburg Gate and many other sites. Berlin is a large city and I couln't really distinguish East and West Germany. My favorite sight in Berlin has to be what is nicknamed the 'hollow tooth' church. It was severly damaged during the bombings of WW2 and instead of fixing the church to its former glory, it remains damaged (at least for the outsite). Unfortunately I wasn't able to enter the church because I arrived after it was closed for the day, but it is still a sight to be seen.
