Approaching the Dividing Line

The drive down from Calgary to the US was pleasant with a friendly group of folks at the border. They asked a few questions and thru the gate we drove.

When you get down to it - that "line" between 2 countries is arbitrary. Just a line on the ground. Nothing much physically - BUT - psychologically it has an effect. The comment is - "Well, we are back". It almost gives a relaxed feeling. Is it the security?

The drive through Montana was just that - head straight south and get to the next national park. This time is was Yellowstone National Park. The signs along the highway are a true necessity to travelers. People say they are an eyesore; they hide the scenery; they are junk. To us they are information, a break in the scenery, and gives us ideas of something to do besides drive. In this case it was a lesson in history and geography.

Having lived near and having crossed the Missouri River many times it was like an old friend. So where does this great river start? The billboard and highway signs told us it was just ahead. Let's stop and take a look. We left the highway, drove on a narrow side road, then off onto a smaller road. Some 2 miles later it was no more then a trail that led us to the parking area and a sign.

The Sign Shows How It Is

This sign shows a drawing of how the Jefferson River and the Madison River come together to form the headwaters of the Missouri River. It was natural to take a picture that spanned the same area as the sign.

The Picture Shows More

Driving further south on these flat and straight roads we noticed the sun was throwing beams all the way to the ground. Not thinking it would really turn out, a picture was taken. Surprise - it was taken at 80mph with Bev at the wheel - scary.

Rays of Sunlight

The northern part of Yellowstone Park is in Montana but will pretend it is all in Wyoming and cover it all on the next entry.
