Tara here:

Well, our "Borneo experience" went a little something like this. We planned to visit Borneo because it is a "top ten" dive site. Then Nathan got a cold and an ear infection - so diving was out of the question. Then, we decided we would visit a place called turtle island to see baby turtles released into the wild and possibly view female turtles laying eggs. Sounds cool, right? Well, apparently a few other people had the same idea and it was all booked up. Bloody Easter weekend!

The other things we wanted to do were visit an orang-utan sanctuary and climb Mt. Kinabulu - but you guessed it - also booked up. Yup, booked, booked, booked. Full right up. So, Borneo was full and we were fed up. What to do we say? Our hostel owner sells us on a relatively expensive tour that would give us the "Borneo experience" he claimed. Boy did he sell us a basket of goods. Our first clue should have been that it was the only tour not booked up. It sucked. A long expensive drive in an uncomfortable mini-bus to see some less-than thrilling and less-than authentic culture. Yippee! The following day's tour was slightly better. Still a long drive but at least this time we had a tour guide, saw a mountain and swam in some hot springs.

Resolving that we had done all we could and not wanting to miss our flight to Nepal in two days from Bangkok, we changed our our flights. Yup, that's right. After two days we were fed up so we gave up and shipped out. I'm sure Borneo is lovely, but unlike the rest of Southeast Asia, if you want to visit - book in advance!

Love always,T&N - Bangkok bound - again!
