I met Azriel C, an artist friend of Carol S's, at the lovely early music holiday concert at the Chiang Mai Sacred Heart Cathedral. He invited the S's and I to attend a community Hanukah party he was organizing for Tuesday night at the popular vegetarian restaurant, Khun Chern, Soi 17, off "Niman" Road.
Thank you Azriel, chef, Aaron, and everyone who showed up to grate potatoes and onions, peel apples, and fry latkes and join the celebration. The latkes were were huge, delicious, and plentiful. It is likely that ours was the only applesauce  to be had in Chiang Mai! The eclectic crowd included Chiang Mai residents, farang and Thai, Jewish and not, and visitors, passing through like me, too. A group of young Laotians even  joined us with their Thai hosts.
Everyone was interested in the Hanukah story which Azriel explained so well. One community member crafted a "Chiang Mai menorah." He made it with small jade elephants and wood and gold leaf. It is truly lovely and the evening was great fun.
Later in the week, I met Azriel at the terrific Taste of Heaven vegetarian restaurant (on Tha Phae Road).  He shared some of his latest paintings with me. He is working on a series is inspired by jazz musicians. He paints on site at clubs and the minimalist black and white compositions have wonderful movement and life. Soon you will be able to see these on his website at: www.azrielcohen.com
I will be watching this talented artist! I meet so many interesting people while traveling, especially when traveling alone. By now, I am missing Mark and would like to share so much of this trip with him. That said, I really do enjoy traveling this way!
