Following the crisis in Lima, we headed to Paracas, a tiny little town further south on pacific coast for a bit more peace and quiet.

Spent 1st night enjoying the local cebiche (peruvian speciality of raw fish marinaded in lemon) which really is delicious and drinking with locals. Christophe is really getting into his salsa... un dos tres...

Next day headed to the Islas Ballestas. The Islas are a marine reserve for all kinds of birds and marine wildlife. First stopped at the famous Candlestick engraved in the coastal desert... no one really knows who did it and why... its a mystery... some people even believe that it was made by aliens!... who knows?

Then headed to the Islas where we got to see an incredible number of birds and an incredible amount of (smelly) guano (bird droppings). It turns out that there is quite a demand for the guano as can be used as fertilizer! also got to see lots of penguins wandering, jumping and falling around the rocks. he he... and finally a massive seal colony with hundreds of them on a beach! they look like lovely animals, but found out that the males sometimes eat their own babies, so not so impressed by that!! and their wailing was quite incredible too.

Next was the Paracas Reserve, a stretch of protected desert. Drove around to various amazing viewpoints where we could check out the dunes of all colours and beautiful beaches. got to see the result of the recent earthquake (aug 07) in the area again, as the resulting tsunami destroyed boats and buildings in the reserve.

We had lunch there with lots of Pelicans around and Audrey almost lost a finger when giving a fish to one of them!

Finally ended up visiting a bodega towards city of Ica, where we discovered all about the local Pisco drink (a little like the italian grappa)... Christophe and I were delighted. purchased a bottle of pisco sour to enjoy on the rest of our travels through peru!
