Left home and caroline at about 0800 for coach to h'row .... arrived about 6.30pm after easy flight. no time difference so not too tiring at all - just long - 6hrs. out of airport by about 7.30.
Met at the airport by cherif, office driver, and practiced my french hard for the next 1.5 hrs of driving around ... to collect some basics shopping which had kindly been done for me, and my local mobile phone, and also a float of money, .... all from Sabina my highly organised PA out here.
Finally got to the flat which i'll be using and then dumped bags etc and changed shirt, and driven back out - virtually all the way back to the airport ! to Begay's house for supper. She is the (gambian) Regional Office Accountant and leaving in 2 weeks - replacement already found. Raphael Sindaye (ex Hum Dept colleague, now RegProgMngr for the west africa region) was also there, and Gordon (Ugandan) Finance Mngr who i've know for some years whilst in Uganda, DRC and Afghanistan, and Bryan (american regional HR Mngr), and Suparna (our indian Private Sector Adviser woman)
The flat is huge (3 big dbl rooms) but impersonal and feels rather lonely and unfamiliar until i've settled in properly. .... v convenient for office, and for Raphael and sevreal other internat staff who are nearby.
Big living/dining room, with a small study area off it.
A big bedroom with a HUGE bed ! and a couple of other smaller bedrooms.
and a fairly basic (by UK stds) kitchen
and a balcony with a view up and down the street
Have been unpacking etc etc and organising myself and reading today. Had long Skype conversation with caroline at midday in which we could see each other - so great - (then later on had a brief skype contact with the Robsons 'cos they could see I was online. Just off out now exploring my locality on foot and doing a little shopping ... and perhaps will see Raphael for supper which he has offered.
all for now. N.
