Penang pearl of the orient
Entry 29 of 47 | show all | print this entry |
Heading north we made a visit to Penang Island the pearl of the orient as it is known. We had no accomodation booked and no idea where we were going, but to be honest that is how the entire trip has been. After reviewing the local guide book we made our way to the best beach on the Island at Batu Ferringhi at 5.30 am in the morning.(thats another story!) We found a small guesthouse run by a Chinese Buddist, right on the beach front, it was basic, clean and the pillows smelt of fish!. We spent Christmas day on the beach and its was different to say the least. The beach was great, the Christmas tree placed on the beach front bar was as to be expected, the turkey sandwich was ok and the Christmas cake from Marks & Spencer in Kuala Lumpur was fab but its really hard getting your head round feeling festive at 40 degees! Penang beach is not the best beach you are ever going to see, however Penang is a fun place to be. The sea is warm but pretty murky hiding the jelly fish which stung Carolyn once we had finished playing water charards. Swimming here is a challenge, there are so many activities the scouts wouldn't know where to start. Making your way to the shore involes dodging 4 wheel drives, foot massage touts, quad bikes, horses and para-sending operations taking off and landing. Once you make it to the sea the green cross code is a vital tool to staying alive. It takes 20 mins to walk the stretch of beach and I counted 10 or so paras sending sails and speed boats, water skiers, about 30ish jet skis and at least 10 local tourist pleasure boats. it really is a great place to watch the world go by, but swim! well I felt like a frightened rabbit trying to cross the M1 motorway. Georgetown is the capital of Penang and full of colonial buildings, it is vibrant and a busy working port a little rough around the edges. We both really enjoyed Penang, the people are gentle, very friendly and always with a smile on their faces. Peneng is like a retiered super model now working for a living!

Glad to see that things are going so well, I am very jealous about the elephants, as I am a big fan of them. Sounds like you had a very different Christmas to ours in the coffee shop! Thinking of you and can't wait for the book! (you will be writing a book won't you??)
Have a happy, safe and nagical New year, may your journey be completed in the style to which you have become accustomed! ... show all
