Our last day before heading off to Sri Lanka, we took a cab to Jerash abo ut 45 km north of Amman. Jerash is the site of a major ruins containing Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and various Islamic Dynasties. It is a major tourist destination in Jordan - luckily, we got by about 9 am and had the ruins mostly to ourselves.

Unfortunately, we didn't have a guide book and there were too few interpretive or education exhibits in the ruins themselves, so we really didn't know what we were seeing. We did eavesdrop on a few tour guides and did read up on things after he fact via the Internet.

The ruins were very expansive and you could easily spend 3+ hours wandering around the area. The extent of buildings, columns, theaters, etc. was indeed quite amazing. What was even more interesting was the juxtaposition of the old ruins surrounded by the modern day city of Jerash. there was only a fence separating the two.

We left by about 11:30 for the airport to continue our travels. Or two flights from Amman to Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) and then to Colombo on Etihad and Sri Lanka airlines were uneventful, other than taking all the entire night to reach Colombo. We arrived finally in Sri Lanka at 4:30 am.

Once we get settled in Sri Lanka, I'll add more to the blog.
