Where I stayed

We got to Bangkok easily from Koh Kong, Cambodia - a one and a half hour minibus to Trat, followed by a five and a half hour coach ride. We wanted to try to get a bus to Khao San Road, but because we could only get to the east bus station, we decided to stay near Siam Square and the shopping centres where we planned on seeing all the Christmas lights. After using the very nice Skytrain (London Underground should take a leaf out of their book) we got to the modern, busy Siam Square. It's not an easy place to just turn up and find accommodation, unless to can spend 50 a night, so after attempting to find some wifi in Paragon Shopping Mall, we referred back to the Lonely Planet. We got back on the Skytrain for one more stop - the National Football Stadium where Bangkok were playing Singapore later that night, so we were met by hoards of fans. Imagine the busiest underground station above the noisy streets - and all this feeling tired with a backpack!

It didn't take much to choose a hotel which cost twice as much as the other two we had stayed in Bangkok before because it was getting late and we were tired. Once we had checked in, we went out in search of a travel agent where we could book our train ticket for the next day to Koh Tao. We went on a wild goose chase and ended up booking from our hotel, a night bus (trains were full) to Chumphon where we could get on a ferry on Christmas Eve morning to Koh Tao arriving at 9am.

We then got ready to walk around the many shopping malls to see all the Christmas lights. They were pretty amazing (especially for a Buddhist country) and the photos don't really do them justice. This part of Bangkok is what we imagine Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to be like, but we'll see!

The next day we went to MBK Shopping Mall and bought our little Christmas presents for each other. I got a top and a pair of Havianas for only 4 and Shane got a new t-shirt. We also perused all of the electronics (Shane's geeky side came out) and were surprised how cheap some things are - if only we were on holiday and not travelling! We also had amazing food for a 1 in the food court.

We went back to the hotel where we were being picked up a 4.30pm for our night bus.
