Where I stayed

After a short flight from Dien Bien Phu we landed in Hanoi.  We found ourselves a cheap bus, after being offered a load of expensive taxis, into town that dropped us in the old part of the city.  A tout jumped onto our bus and took us to his hotel, even though we decided not to stay there, he was very helpful in guiding us to the hotel we had found online.  It was clean, spacious and only $12 a night.  We went to a western restaurant as we had no choie of food in Dien Bien Phu, and enjoyed pasta and a huge baguette!

The next day we thought we would see if there were any "must do's" in the city...We found none, but enjoyed walking arund the old part of town dodging mopeds (we learnt that Vietnamese cross the road slowly rather than quickly so mopeds have chance to dodge them - Kate has perfected this technique, Shane has not)!  We booked a Halong Bay tour for three days and two nights, which left the next morning.  We also booked our open bus ticket to travel down the rest of Vietnam after we had returned from Halong Bay.  That night, while having dinner, we overheard some guy telling others about the typhoon - Son Tinh - which was due to hit Hanoi the next day! We realised our Halong Bay trip might be in jeopardy but we would have to wait until the next day to find out.
