We didn't want to, but we had to go back to Chennai to catch our flight to Kochi.  It took us two hours to finally find our homestay, after our airport taxi man gave up trying to find it (we had no phone number) and dropped us at a random hotel in the area!  It was a national holiday (Onam) so all shops were shut, internet cafes were closed and no one including police, fire men, tuk tuk drivers or locals knew the address of where we were staying.  We thought we were going to have to stay at the random hotel for the night, when a group of high spirited (a little bit drunk) Indian men,  who were celebrating Onam, came to our rescue with a smart phone, enabling us to get the phone number that we needed!  One of them dropped us there in his rickshaw (although he was driving on the wrong side of the road most of the way, possibly due to alcohol!)

The next day we went to Fort Kochi and Shane found the Tea Pot cafe which he had visited previously with his mum (hi mum)!  We walked to the Chinese fishing nets, and having just left the cafe, we understood what a monsoon is!  Wet through to the skin, and it rained all day, while we visited the Synagogue and the Dutch Palace - both were unimpressive!  Due to dodgy bellies, we thought a safe bet for dinner would be a veggie burger at Chic King - India's fast food!

Next day we went on the Kerala back waters, which was very relaxing if a little uncomfortable (wooden seating for seven hours.)  We had a lovely Keralan lunch on the boat, although we have limited pictures as we failed to check the battery on the camera - oops!  After lunch we went on smaller canoes down man made streams peeling off the back waters.  It was idyllic and picturesque until a water snake fell from an overhanging branch into our boat.  Luckily it was just as scared of us as we were of it and soon got back into the water!

On our final day we went back to Fort Kochi and were lucky enough to spot dolphins.  We spent the rest of the day chilling out before catching a night bus to Kodaikanal...more on that later.

That is not monsoon. We have had much worse here! Never seen the rain so hard. Hope you are being sensible in what you are eating and drinking now!
