Route 66 Buffet
We got up and started to get ready and whilst I was out putting a few bits in the car. Claire answered our door to the owner of the motel who informed us that checkout was 11 o’clock. We had crossed over another time zone and this time my phone didn’t automatically update so we were still on New Mexican time.
We quickly got ready and removed our things from the room and checked out half an hour late instead of half an hour early as we thought we were. We went back to the Big Texan as they had a buffet breakfast on offer which we found most appealing. We had missed the breakfast because of our time mix up so we had to have steak lunch instead. They guy recognised us from the previous night; we didn’t recognise him because we had two females serve us
Along the way we found a Route 66 Museum in Clinton so we stopped and had a wander around. We watched a movie about Route 66 and it claimed 85% of the road still exists. We have been struggling to find about 10% of it, the road is very well hidden. Also the Sat Nav doesn’t like using it even when we try force it to. On the way out of the museum there were people offering free drinks. My guard was immediately up as I previously said nothing is free in America. Claire went over and claimed her free lemonade and then it hit me what was going on. They were trying to preach their religious ideals; they coax you in with a drink and then start about the bible etc. We were easy targets in our short skirts and low cut tops. A very quickly drunk drink later we made our excuses as they tried to convince us to go to a concert they had on at 8 o’clock tonight.
After a quick getaway our next stop was in Oklahoma City. On route we found a Route 66 Diner with buffet advertised. We pulled over and it was restaurant in a casino but still cheap buffet which included drinks and dessert you can’t complain
We had to make an emergency petrol stop on the final leg of the Oklahoma stretch. I got out to pay and didn’t understand a word of what the kid was saying to me. He didn’t even look old enough to be working in the garage, smiling seemed to be the right response and he did at one point say he would give me a hand if I needed it. I have no idea how old he thought I was but I’m sure I’m old enough to be his teen mum or mom.
We programmed in a motel with budget in the title. When we got there all of the furniture was outside of the room and it looked like we might catch something just being in the car park. We looked up the Econolodge a trusted accommodation but when we got there it had changed to Midway inn. We booked a room anyway and they only had one downstairs room but they didn’t want to give it to us as we would have to go back back. We informed her we didn’t mind going back back, so she let us have the room. It was just around the corner from the room she tried to give us so I’m not too sure what the problem was. When we were checking in there were some locals getting a room for the night, they had to pay a deposit for pretty much everything. We thought it was common practice and this didn’t turn out to be the case we didn’t need to pay any deposits. It seems that it was just reserved for the locals. I’m not sure what sort of area we were staying in but something told me we needed to leave quickly. We had a nice room with a fridge that worked a kitchen and a TV. We watched a couple of films before we went to bed.
