I can sadly say that my enthusiasm, in fact willingness to try any more Korean food is over.

Among my lovely mix of housemates is one hilarious Korean guy and he's a chef. Great! So the first night the Columbian girl comes in to the room with spicy mouth gestures and says Aaron has cooked something so spicy. Curious, I hastily make myself visible in the kitchen. 'You wanna try Korean food?’ I reply as though I just happen to be there so might as well. But when I look at the many different alien shapes and textures inside the pot I become less excited. ‘It’s not fish is it?’ He replies no, its not, he takes out a sponge looking strip on a spoon, its like fish but not. I decide to just try it and as I am manoeuvring the strange foamy sensation he says, ‘It’s not fish but made from fish’. I quickly chew; swallow, down a glass of water and try to forget it ever happened.

I didn’t want to judge by the plane food standards but having been in Australia for two weeks and this being the second time I was disappointed I will not put myself through it again. A fellow travellers birthday, so I have to be enthusiastic about the choice of restaurant. So I stand in the busy cue at ‘pepper lunch’ and embarrassingly ask the cashier if it all comes with pepper, thankfully I can have without. So next question, the meat on the menu all looks raw, if I have the steak rice, will it be cooked well. He assures me it will. Birthday girl’s food arrives first, a large plate with rice and raw meat, just before the waiter walks away; he says ‘you do know how to cook right’? Thank god he told us before she might have started chomping down on some raw meat, she mixes it up the beef starts to brown and I am ever hopeful.

My dish arrives, not the big cook yourself extravaganza but an honest sized bowl of meat on rice and oh..what’s that? A prawn! ‘Why does everything always have to have bloody prawns in it, why didn’t it say on the menu’ ‘Oh wait, no...The fat on each strip of the beef just seems to be shaped like a prawn’ calming down, but what are they trying to do to me? The meat is cooked nicely, the rice is, well, rice. But the seaweed however, is not.

So sadly, living with a Korean chef is no longer an added benefit and I can safely say that I will never intentionally eat Korean food again, I might add Japanese in there too just to save any future disappointment. It’s strange how my palate and fussiness increases and decreases over my travels, but I’m sure it all bala
