Veneretki Kambodzhaan meni mukavasti maisemia katellessa.

Illalla kaytiin syomassa paikallista ruokaa: amok-kalaa.

Viela huominen paiva taalla ja sit lahetaan etelaan.

The boat trip to Cambodia went nicely with great views. The scenery was totally different from Vietnam's or well, you can easily differentiate them. Somehow Cambodia was more lush and green and calmer than Vietnam. The children did wave the same way they did on the benches of the river in Vietnamese side though. :)

Three hours by boat and we arrived in a dock behind someone's house, climbed up the muddy path and took a minibus to Phnom Penh via veeery bumpy road! I mean VERY!  1,5 more hrs to Phnom Penh by bus didn't matter though since the scenery was amazing.

At some point it felt like we were on African savanna but with more damp and more green view. And the sun was setting which made it even more surreal. And those temples they have there, so unique with all the smallest details and pastel colors. What a start!

They brought us to King Travel hotel where we took a basic room for just $8 (with fan, tv, hot and cold shower). There is traffic in Phnom Penh too but you cannot hear it the smae way as in Vietnam, they don't simply use horns as effectively as Vietnamese. Which of course saves our ears a lot. ;D

The buildings are as great as the temples, streets are quite clean and wide and they sure have different shops and restos too. And a Nokia flagship store!???

So at least Phnom Penh is totally opposite to my expectations. I expected to see the poverty more clearly (compare to Vietnam) but maybe it's the capital city's glamour. We'll see about that when we get further.

Yesterday we went to Tuol Sleng museum which is an old school that Pol Pot changed into a prison during his rule in the 70s. They e.g. imprisoned people with higher education, or people who knew foreigners, and accused them of opposing the state without real reasons. They tortured the imprisoners as long as they gave a false testimony on their guilt and then they moved them to Choeung Ek Killing Fields where they executed them and dumbed in the holes of ground. The stuff in the museum was pretty harsh and we spent few hours to see the prisons, photos of the imprisoners, paintings, even skulls, and a document  where the family members share their views of the time. And isn't it weird it was just a few decades ago it took place..

In the eve we had the local dish of Amok fish. Steamed in a banana leaf and spiced up with chili and coconut milk, it sure was delicious! Even thought of it and Im hungry again. ;D

This morning we walked through a market hall where they sell everything from alive chickens to snakes too. And the smell was inexplicable...

On the streets they have whole ducks grilled..the head and all. And they say that tarantula is a local specialty. Yak!

Phnom Penh is a very positive surprise to both of us and we sure like it. However, I would say for shopping I still prefer Vietnam.

One more day here tomorrow and we'll continue to south.

ciao ciao, nora
