Friday 25th June 2010

After a rather heart braking goodbye from my beloved Maria, Marco and Julia at London Bridge Train Station and a few little tears :-(, our Emirates flight was without a doubt very nice and so we arrived Dubai 19.50 pm. Rather nervous at customs, getting the Visa was dead easy (we didn't really do much research on Dubai Visas) and Dubai Airport was most impressive. We soon learned that public transport in Dubai was going to be rather confusing, but there was many friendly people around pointing us in the right direction. We were determined to find our hotel without a taxi and so we did after a tiring 45min walk in the still very present heat. The receptionist was rather unfriendly or culturally different but that was more orientated to poor Clare who seemed to be very good at not taking him serious. We dropped of our stuff, showered and started our search for food!

Saturday 26th June 2010

This was our exploring Day, we managed to find everything we wanted to see and we seemed to be able to stick to our no taxi rule. We experienced public transport, walked along the beach where we saw camels, visited the National Museum and saw many huge but empty looking skyscrapers. Dubai appears to be trying to become New York, it looks rather weird and misplaced.

Sunday 27th June 2010

Germany match day. We walked to the World Trade Center and decided to take the Bus to one of the big Shopping Malls. Lost in Transport, we ended up driving in the totally wrong direction but yet managed to find a Shopping Center. We were back at the hotel in time for a nice swim in the roof top swimming pool before we got ready to watch the highly important Germany-England match. Whilst swimming, we met another German from Hamburg which we convinced to join us to watch the match much to Clare's annoyance as she was now outnumbered. We had already picked a suitable pub the previous day. Initially, I kept quiet as I expected there to be more England than Germany supporting fans but it turned out to be the other way around. We had a group of Australian Navy Guys just sat behind us, all supporting Germany. Final result Germany 4 - England 1(2), one more goal would have been even better but I was more than satisfied!!! We soon started chatting to the Australians, joined them for an Indian feast and returned to the pub later to watch the second match of the day. Fun evening but Clare and I are convinced that all Navy people are the same; a bit crazy!!!
