So, having seen a nice deal on to fly to London, I took the opportunity to visit my sister-in-law and her fiance. The flights were only 25 euro return, no taxes or anything!! And with an EU passport, I managed to avoid the airport check-in therefore saving myself a little more cash. Taking the train to Vienna would cost more (barely)!

OK so bargain bragging aside, England was somewhere I really wanted to visit anyway. I left after work on Wednesday the 18th of March, flying in incredible discomfort into Stansted Airport. From here I took an incredibly expensive train (19 pounds!) to London Liverpool Station, met Megan, and took the tube to her place where Trent made us some tasty dinner. Both of them had to work on Thursday, so we all went to bed early and then I slept in anyway! The next day, I wasn't feeling really adventurous but I did feel like spending some money so I went shopping at Westfield London at Sheperd's Bush. Actually before that, I bought an Oyster Card to travel around the tube system on - for me it was better value than a travel pass, and for ANYONE it's better value than buying single tickets! A single ticket costs 4 pounds, or a single trip on Oyster costs 1.60. You do the math.
Anyway Westfield was large and somewhat familiar, as most of the shopping malls in Europe are small compared to Australian standards. The shops were of a richer variety than I'm used to, but I still had a great time looking around. I had to tell myself I was only allowed to buy things for me, however, otherwise I could have spent hundreds of dollars on things (ooh, Jo would love that! Hey that's perfect for Fiona! :P). In the end I got a book, some earrings and a necklace.
For lunch I headed straight to the food court and found myself a PIE with gravy. It was a bit too gourmet (and expensive), but still it made me think of home so I really loved it. I walked around Sheperd's Bush after lunch, and discovered that I could have grabbed a cheap pie elsewhere - but maybe it wouldn't be very good, who knows?
There was a nice park and because of the beautiful sunshine, there were people occupying it happily. Not only people, I got my very first glimpse of a squirrel! Oh, I was excited, they're such cute things, but I couldn't get a very good picture :(
I popped onto the tube and headed for Marble Arch, where I was interested in seeing Hyde Park. I believe this is the largest open space in London, and it certainly is enormous!! I couldn't even see the other side (although the smog might have had something to do with that).
Seeing as everyone else was sitting around in the sun, I joined in to soak up some warm vitamins and read my book for a couple of hours. It was so very relaxing, until the clouds caught up and the sun went away. Suddenly my t-shirt wasn't quite enough apparel, so I only wandered the park for a little longer before taking the tube back to Megan's place, where Trent once again delighted me with a homecooked meal, and we all chatted for a while about what to do while in London before heading to bed.
The rest of my London trip will be covered in a following blog, so stay tuned! :)
