What a difference a border crossing makes. Slovenia was just what the doctor ordered after a week of not being able to take a step without tripping over another tourist. Not that Slovenia is lacking in tourism, it just has normal tourism. And the prices were nearly cut in half across the board compared to some of the rip offs in Italy. All in all I was quite pleased with this little country that so few people know anything about.

The capital city is Ljubljana, and if you say the j's as y’s you might just be able to pronounce it. I had a great time strolling through the relatively quiet streets of the capital’s old town before ascending to Ljubljana Castle which sits atop a hill near the center of the city. It gave some nice views, but the real highlight of Slovenia came the next day.

Lake Bled is a beautiful lake tucked into the Julian Alps about an hour outside of the city that is an easy and popular day trip destination. And what a gorgeous, gorgeous lake it is; I felt like every other photo I was taking there could be a postcard. If the lake wasn’t enough, there is also a tiny island in the middle of the lake with a church sitting on it, and to top it all off Bled Castle sits very dramatically on a sheer cliff overlooking the whole scene.

If you ever plan a trip to Europe, do what you can to include this best kept secret.

Serbia is next…
